An armed man who was killed in Fort Lauderdale over the weekend after three officers were forced to fire their weapons was identified on Tuesday, authorities said. <\/p>\n
According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the suspect was identified as 43-year-old Luis Felipe Londono Ospina. <\/p>\n
Police on Saturday said officers arrived near Chateau Park Drive and Northwest Ninth Avenue after receiving reports of a disturbance.<\/p>\n
While details of that disturbance have not been released, surveillance video shared by neighbors showed two cars along Chateau Park Drive, and appeared to show a person on the street arguing with someone inside the car.<\/p>\n
During the incident, Ospina, who was not related to the initial disturbance, approached officers, police said.<\/p>\n
“We know the suspect fired his weapon during the encounter with the officers,” said Fort Lauderdale Police Chief William Schultz. “Three FLPD officers discharged their department-issued firearms at the time, striking the suspect.”<\/p>\n
NBC6 spoke to a woman who heard the gunshots being fired.<\/p>\n
“First I hear like, ‘Pow, Pow,’ then, ‘Pow, Pow,’ then a whole like, like it was a shootout,” she said.<\/p>\n
Ospina was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n
“In accordance with the department policy, the three officers will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” Schultz said.<\/p>\n
No other injuries were reported, and there is no threat to the community, police said.<\/p>\n
