CAPE CORAL, Fla.\u2014Cape Coral is taking proactive steps to ensure the community is prepared for the upcoming hurricane season, which starts in just over three months.<\/p>\n
City leaders are reflecting on past hurricanes, like Ian, Helene, and Milton, to refine their disaster response strategies.<\/p>\n
Southeast Cape and the Yacht Club on Driftwood Parkway, which were significantly affected, are currently under construction.<\/p>\n
WINK News attended the community gathering and observed that residents emphasized the importance of being ready before a storm hits.<\/p>\n
Attendees called for stronger communication, clearer roles, and a comprehensive disaster playbook. They also highlighted the need for better education on recovery programs and having documentation ready for reimbursement.<\/p>\n
Cape Coral hosted a disaster recovery workshop to discuss what worked and what needs improvement after the hurricanes.<\/p>\n
The focus was on housing, infrastructure, businesses, health care, and coordination.<\/p>\n
Emergency Management Director Ryan Lamb said the goal is to improve cost recovery and support residents using part of a $1.1 billion HUD grant secured after Hurricane Ian.<\/p>\n
“We want to make sure that when a disaster strikes our city, that we’re as prepared as we can be, and we have a tough city,” said Lamb.<\/p>\n
The plan is under development with Tetra Tech, a consulting company partnering with the city.<\/p>\n
Health care leaders noted that lessons from Ian have strengthened response systems, but training and strong city liaisons remain crucial.<\/p>\n
Officials stressed that resilience is vital after the city’s experience during Ian.<\/p>\n
The current message is clear: prepare now to ensure a faster recovery next time.<\/p>\n
