CAPE CORAL, Fla.\u2014A Cape Coral man is transforming his yard to thrive during Florida’s dry season.<\/p>\n
Brian Hook is taking matters into his own hands by revamping his lawn to ensure it withstands the lack of rain.<\/p>\n
“It’s crunchy. I mean, you can, I can fill it with the soles of my shoes. If I were barefoot, no, I wouldn’t be walking on this like this,” said Hook, describing the condition of his front yard.<\/p>\n
Hook’s yard, affected by water restrictions, has become dehydrated and weed-ridden.<\/p>\n
“With the current water restrictions. Can’t really water, so you end up with a brown lawn. When the grass is stressed, it also gets more and more weeds. I don’t like weeds,” said Hook.<\/p>\n
Hook’s backyard features Zoysia grass, which he discovered by chance.<\/p>\n
“I came across the Zoysia by accident. One, I can get it locally, and two, that’s what they put in at like the resorts,” said Hook.<\/p>\n
Zoysia grass grows thick, preventing weeds from taking over.<\/p>\n
“It grows so thick, it has a hard time letting weeds grow because it smothers everything,” said Hook.<\/p>\n
In another part of his yard, Hook planted Bermuda grass.<\/p>\n
“Both grasses are considered an alpha grass, except the Bermuda grows a lot faster,” said Hook. “Bermuda is like Zoysia on Red Bull.”<\/p>\n
Hook believes transforming his dead grass into a resilient green landscape is worthwhile.<\/p>\n
