JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (WAND) – The Jacksonville Center for the Arts announced it will not move forward with purchasing the historic Illinois Theater.\u00a0<\/p>\n
JCA said the decision comes due to a gap between funds raised to date and the total capital required to complete the project.\u00a0<\/p>\n
JCA said it has worked with community partners and donors to pursue transforming the Illinois Theater into a civic center and performing arts venue.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The goal was to raise $8.8 million to repurpose, restore, and revitalize the theater.<\/p>\n
Progress was made with that goal, including a $1 million pledge from Cathy Randall and the endorsement of Jacksonville Main Street. However, the board\u00a0<\/p>\n
determined it could not proceed with the purchase without securing sufficient<\/p>\n
financial commitments to support both the renovation costs and initial operations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Although this decision is disappointing, it reflects our commitment to fiscal responsibility and stewardship,” said Larry Kuster, JCA board president. “We are deeply grateful to the donors, partners, and organizations who supported this effort and believed in the vision for the Illinois Theater.”<\/p>\n
