TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee City Commission decided to move forward with limiting unagendaed speaker time during commission meetings. <\/a><\/p>\n

Going forward, the allotted time for people who aren\u2019t on the agenda will be capped at 30 minutes total. <\/p>\n

The decision was passed with a 3 to 2 vote and comes about a month after a commission meeting ended early following uproar from some people in the audience during unagendaed speaker time. Normally, that portion of the agenda can last for hours, with each person getting three minutes to speak on whatever they like. <\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Mayor John Dailey said he wants to bring the meetings back to civility. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe try to bring un-agenda speakers back to a position where it is a positive influence in this community and a positive public participation, let me also remind you we are not required at all to have un-agenda speakers,\u201d the mayor said. <\/p>\n

However, some commissioners, like Jeremy Matlo,w argued that 30 minutes is not enough time for public input. <\/p>\n

\u201cGovernment should not be in the business of deciding which speech it would like to hear that day and that\u2019s essentially what we\u2019re stating here today,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

The mayor also mentioned that in the future, if the commission thinks there is productive public discussion, leaders could vote to extend the 30-minute limit. <\/p>\n
