{"id":161383,"date":"2026-02-19T16:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T16:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/161383\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T16:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T16:53:13","slug":"ken-welch-kicks-off-re-election-bid-with-jabs-at-charlie-crist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/161383\/","title":{"rendered":"Ken Welch kicks off re-election bid with jabs at Charlie Crist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">St. Petersburg Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/ken-welch\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Ken Welch<\/a> kicked off his re-election campaign Wednesday evening at the St. Pete Athletic Club, taking his first public shots at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/charlie-crist\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Charlie Crist<\/a>, the former Governor and potential opponent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just hours after delivering his annual <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/780887-ken-welch-pushes-600m-infrastructure-bond-vows-progress-on-gas-plant-district-during-state-of-the-city-address\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">State of the City address<\/a>, Welch told supporters the race was a choice between his steady leadership during recent turbulent times and what he described as alternatives who have not even had a seat at the table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have a highly effective team, there\u2019s no reason to change it, especially for a leader that has no vision and has never been involved in the things we\u2019ve dealt with in the last 5 years, from COVID to hurricanes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/historic-gas-plant-district\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Historic Gas Plant (District)<\/a> to housing,\u201d Welch said. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t elect someone who hasn\u2019t been here, that hasn\u2019t had a voice in the vision like we have. We\u2019ve faced those challenges, and we\u2019ve shown what we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Mayor\u2019s campaign kicks off amid political headwinds, including a growing number of opponents and lingering fallout from controversy over an unauthorized transfer of funds by former registered agent <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/yolanda-brown\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Yolanda Brown<\/a> from a political committee tied to his re-election effort. That situation has been referred to law enforcement, and the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89771\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">St. Petersburg Progress PAC<\/a> has been created to support Welch\u2019s campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welch did not address the situation on Wednesday, but told supporters he needs their financial support to help his campaign defend against Crist\u2019s potential campaign. A PAC supporting Crist\u2019s potential campaign has <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/780693-political-committee-expected-to-support-charlie-crist-for-st-pete-mayor-surpasses-1m-raised\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">surpassed $1 million<\/a> in total fundraising, even though the former Governor has not officially thrown his hat into the ring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaytrumbull.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jay-trumbull-florida-politics-banner-ads-728x90-b-scaled-e1740688220698.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welch did not name Crist directly during his remarks, but acknowledged the financial imbalance his campaign faces ahead of the looming election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cSo, here\u2019s the ask,\u201d Welch told supporters Wednesday. \u201cWe are facing an opponent that\u2019s got hundreds of thousands of dollars from campaigns five years ago when he was running for Senator or Governor or whatever the next office was. We need to raise funds to get our message out. We\u2019re not trying to go dollar-for-dollar from some Washington fund, but we need to be able to tell our story about what we\u2019ve achieved in St. Pete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The kickoff featured remarks from supporters highlighting endorsements from local police and fire unions and many of Welch\u2019s accomplishments. They said they believed in Welch\u2019s vision for St. Petersburg and rallied behind efforts to re-elect him for another term in office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association Director and General Counsel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suncoastpba.com\/sasha-lohn\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sasha Lohn<\/a> emphasized the significance of backing from rank-and-file first responders, noting that leaders of the police and firefighter unions had chosen to support Welch publicly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn a time where it would have been easier for them to stand on the sidelines, to stay neutral, to stay out of it, they got behind this Mayor,\u201d Lohn said. \u201cThey endorsed this Mayor. \u2026 Public safety isn\u2019t a slogan, it\u2019s a responsibility, and under Mayor Welch we have had a partner in City Hall since the moment he stepped foot there. That is rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.phrd.com\/people?location=tallahassee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-778704 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Seann-Frazier-Web-Ad-3-Florida-Politics-Final-scaled-e1770577555189.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"727\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/copley-gerdes\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Copley Gerdes<\/a> referenced his time serving alongside Welch and described him as collaborative and steady. He said there is no one other than Welch that he\u2019d choose to lead the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf there\u2019s one Mayor that I get to pick, and my kids get to pick, to lead us over the next four years \u2013 sorry Mayor, it\u2019s not five this time it\u2019s four \u2013 but if there\u2019s one Mayor that my kids and my family get to pick for the next four years it\u2019s Ken Welch,\u201d Gerdes said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welch used the event to reiterate his commitment to redeveloping the Historic Gas Plant District \u2014 the long-debated 86-acre site once home to a predominantly Black neighborhood displaced for the construction of Tropicana Field for the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/tampa-bay-rays\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>. The Rays are currently negotiating funding for a new ballpark in Tampa after previous ownership backed out of a deal with Welch\u2019s team that would have kept the team in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The saga has drawn political scrutiny, putting Welch on the defensive early in his re-election campaign as a growing list of opponents step forward to challenge him. City Council member <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/tag\/brandi-gabbard\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Brandi Gabbard<\/a> \u2014 who has announced plans to run against Welch \u2013 recently scored a political victory over him with the Council\u2019s approval of a resolution she pushed to slow Welch\u2019s progress on redevelopment of the site for further consultation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welch has said he intends to work with Council members to address concerns but remains committed to advancing the project nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s time to move forward,\u201d Welch said. \u201cWe have planned for decades. It\u2019s time to bring the jobs and the housing and the economic opportunity to honor those promises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Welch\u2019s re-election campaign will unfold alongside a proposed $600 million infrastructure bond referendum expected to appear on the municipal ballot. The bond, he said, would fund stormwater and sewer upgrades and other infrastructure improvements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When asked by Florida Politics during a press gaggle whether the bond could become a political issue during the campaign, Welch acknowledged the unusual overlap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYou usually don\u2019t advocate for a bond when you\u2019re on the same ballot, but this is so important,\u201d Welch said. \u201cIt\u2019s like the Penny for Pinellas that funds our infrastructure for fire stations and police stations and libraries.
