She was the second-place finisher <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/755283-thomas-scott-naya-young-head-to-october-runoff-after-crowded-special-election-for-tampa-city-council\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">in the Primary<\/a>\u00a0behind former City Council member Thomas Scott, but went on to defeat him in the runoff <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/762746-naya-young-elected-to-tampa-city-council-defeating-thomas-scott-in-special-runoff-election\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">with 61% of the vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFrom day one, I made a commitment to be present in the community \u2014 not just to listen, but to act,\u201d Young said. \u201cThat means asking the tough questions and making sure our neighborhoods are heard and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since her election, Young has worked to ensure a strong presence among constituents by attending local neighborhood meetings, community events and other stakeholder gatherings, offering residents a way to communicate with their representative on the City Council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Young currently chairs the city\u2019s Parks and Recreation Committee, where she works to ensure robust access to green space, youth programming and community amenities. In addition to her work on the Council, Young also serves on the Tampa Bay Estuary Board.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ncf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-722105 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Sunburn_FloridaPoliticsWebsite_728x905186-scaled-e1740018793631.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been intentional about building relationships, understanding systems, and bringing people together to move our city forward,\u201d Young said. \u201cThere\u2019s more work to do, and I\u2019m ready to continue delivering for District 5.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Young said she intends to focus her re-election campaign on further community engagement, expanding economic opportunity, strengthening public safety and investing in future local leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Young is currently serving out the remaining term of\u00a0Gwen Henderson, who passed away last Summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/746172-naya-young-enters-tampa-city-council-district-5-race-now-among-nearly-a-dozen-candidates\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Young has been<\/a>\u00a0a grassroots activist since she was a teenager, canvassing for the campaign of former Democratic Sen.\u00a0James Hargrett\u00a0before later working to help elect former Rep.\u00a0Betty Reed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">She began nonprofit work with the Tampa Heights Junior Civic Association, later becoming the group\u2019s Executive Director. She now serves as a consultant for the group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaytrumbull.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/jay-trumbull-florida-politics-banner-ads-728x90-b-scaled-e1740688220698.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among her advocacy efforts, Young pushed for walkable green spaces, diabetes awareness, and law enforcement reform. She has an undergraduate degree in culture and media communication from the University of South Florida and a master\u2019s degree in political science from Howard University. She also received a nonprofit management certification from the University of Tampa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Young marched to victory last year despite a funding deficit.
