{"id":16320,"date":"2025-10-22T22:05:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/16320\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T22:05:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:05:12","slug":"new-wrong-way-prevention-technology-coming-to-the-selmon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/16320\/","title":{"rendered":"New wrong way prevention technology coming to the Selmon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 Drivers on the Selmon Expressway will soon see new signs and markings designed to stop wrong way drivers.<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Crews are now installing new wrong way prevention technology on the Selmon Expressway in Tampa<br \/>\n<br \/>There will be new pavement lighting, flashing beacons and fiber connections to help alert drivers<br \/>\n<br \/>Wrong way driving is a particular concern on the Selmon Expressway because of the unique reversible express lanes<br \/>\n<br \/>THEA\u2019s board of directors also just approved a $362 million contract for the South Selmon Capacity Project, which will add one lane in each direction on more than 4 miles of the Selmon<\/p>\n<p>Crews are now installing those new additions along the expressway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall in transportation, wrong way driving is critical. We want to make sure we\u2019re preventing it,\u201d said Judith Villegas, manager of the intelligent transportation system on the Selmon Expressway.<\/p>\n<p>Villegas is leading the project to install new wrong way prevention technology.<\/p>\n<p>Crews are now installing pavement lighting to alert drivers on ramps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies show that when drivers are going the wrong way, whether it\u2019s intoxication or other issues, they are likely looking down,\u201d Villegas said.<\/p>\n<p>There will also be new signs with beacons that will flash if a driver is going the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>Crews are also adding updated fiber connections that traffic managers can use to alert other drivers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1022_bn9_wrong_way_GT_2.jpeg\" alt=\"Wrong way driving is a particular concern on the Selmon Expressway because of the unique reversible express lanes. Get their attention first so that they can self-correct,\u201d said Greg Slater, CEO of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority. \u201cBut then if they don\u2019t self-correct, it can notify the traffic management center or the message boards. Notify the most amount of people we can so they can be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wrong way driving is a particular concern on the Selmon Expressway because of the unique reversible express lanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose have additional access points that may be confusing to those who don\u2019t use it too often. So we wanted to make sure we\u2019re enhancing those systems as well,\u201d Villegas said.<\/p>\n<p>Villegas the project is about halfway done \u2013 and they hope to have everything activated by early next year.<\/p>\n<p>THEA\u2019s board of directors also just approved a $362 million contract for the South Selmon Capacity Project.<\/p>\n<p>It will add one lane in each direction on more than 4 miles of the Selmon and will modernize 26 bridges on the span.
