{"id":165659,"date":"2026-02-23T14:26:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T14:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/165659\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T14:26:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T14:26:07","slug":"thomasville-and-velda-dairy-road-signal-activates-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/165659\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomasville and Velda Dairy Road signal activates Tuesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NORTHEAST TALLAHASSEE, FL \u2014 A <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtxl.com\/northeast-tallahassee\/construction-to-begin-on-thomasville-road-velda-dairy-traffic-light-monday-what-to-expect\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new traffic light<\/a> at the intersection of Thomasville Road and Velda Dairy Road will be active Tuesday, marking a milestone in a larger effort to improve traffic flow and safety in northeast Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH FULL REPORT BELOW:<\/p>\n<p>New traffic light on Thomasville Road at Velda Dairy Road set to go active Tuesday<\/p>\n<p>The signal is part of a <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/go.boarddocs.com\/fla\/talgov\/Board.nsf\/Public\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partnership<\/a> between the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.talgov.com\/Main\/Home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City of Tallahassee<\/a> and the Florida Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fdot.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FDOT<\/a> installed the light for approximately $1.8 million, according to FDOT Spokesperson Ian Satter, with construction beginning last summer.<\/p>\n<p>Satter says the new signal is designed to address longstanding concerns about access and safety along the busy corridor.<\/p>\n<p>About 55,000 cars travel on Thomasville Road daily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to alleviate some of the concerns for people trying to access Thomasville Road, which everyone knows is a very busy corridor throughout that region. Also, it will improve safety. That&#8217;s the most important factor so that we can reduce the opportunity for serious crashes to occur at that intersection by controlling how traffic moves through that area,&#8221; Satter said.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the traffic light, the project also brings changes for pedestrians, including a new crosswalk across Thomasville Road.<\/p>\n<p>A new turning lane will also provide access to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/cwpll.talgov.com\/agendafiles\/TSP250008.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new developments<\/a> in the area, including a Starbucks and a Sunstop.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Tallahassee completed those upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>Message boards have been placed in both directions along Thomasville Road just ahead of the traffic light to alert drivers to the changes ahead of full activation.<\/p>\n<p>Satter says they\u2019ll coordinate with the City to monitor traffic so that the transition in smooth.<\/p>\n<p>This story was reported on-air by a journalist and has been converted to this platform with the assistance of AI.
