The City of St. Petersburg is looking to change that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">St. Pete is developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpete.org\/residents\/current_projects\/transportation_projects\/sidewalk_master_plan.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sidewalk Master Plan<\/a> to evaluate the city\u2019s existing sidewalk and curb ramp network within the public right-of-way. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The process will involve identifying gaps through a GIS-based inventory system and improving accessibility for residents with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cFor years, we\u2019ve been building sidewalks on the sides of arterial roads, and that\u2019s essentially complete,\u201d Evan Mory, the city\u2019s Transportation and Parking Management Director, said in a conversation with St. Pete Rising. \u201cIf there are gaps in those areas, it\u2019s usually due to right-of-way issues or other factors that don\u2019t make it feasible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">The city is now shifting its focus toward expanding sidewalk connectivity in other parts of St. Pete and enhancing overall mobility. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Mory noted that the Sidewalk Master Plan is separate from initiatives such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stpete.org\/residents\/parking___transportation\/complete_streets.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Complete Streets Implementation Plan<\/a>, which prioritizes trails, bike lanes, and other micro-mobility improvements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">In 2025, St. Pete recorded four pedestrian fatalities and three bicycle fatalities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">Across Pinellas County, 451 pedestrian-related crashes were reported, ranking it among the most dangerous counties in Florida for pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">\u201cOne basic amenity that\u2019s not always provided is filling in those sidewalk gaps and making it accessible for those with mobility challenges,\u201d Mory said, speaking both as a city official and as a resident who regularly walks and bikes throughout St. Pete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\">He also pointed to the need for updated curb ramps. \u201cSome are 30 years old and don\u2019t meet city standards anymore,\u201d Mory said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Have you noticed how some sidewalks in St. Pete abruptly end while others are missing altogether?
