Kirby Smart and Mario Cristobal certainly delivered in front of former Florida coach Steve Spurrier at the Steve Spurrier awards in Gainesville, Florida on Monday night. <\/p>\n
Smart was at the awards along with Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson, who was being honored for being named the FWAA\u2019s Defensive Freshman of the Year. <\/a><\/p>\n The Georgia coach first joked that all the NIL money Georgia paid Robinson helped pay for the 50th birthday celebrations of Robinson\u2019s parents. <\/p>\n Then Smart took a jab at the Miami head coach. <\/p>\n \u201cMario\u2019s right behind him (Robinson) and if it had been up to him, he would have paid a lot more NIL money because it came down to us, too,\u201d Smart said. \u201cSo I don\u2019t like you being real close to Mario right now.\u201d<\/p>\n Smart then relayed a story about how Cristobal made a crack about Smart\u2019s physique, something Lane Kiffin did earlier in the season as well. <\/p>\n Smart then brought up the lack of conference championships Cristobal had won at Miami. <\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s like, you ought to start getting on some protein shakes. You\u2019ve had too many carbs,\u201d Smart said. \u201cAnd I said, well you probably ought to spend some time with Steve Spurrier because he won more conference championships at Duke than you have in Miami.\u201d<\/p>\n At the conclusion of Smart\u2019s remarks, he joked that he had to leave the event so that he wouldn\u2019t have to hear Cristobal\u2019s response. <\/p>\n \u201cHey, Mario, no fat jokes,\u201d Smart said in his closing remarks.<\/p>\n Cristobal did not have any fat jokes in his response, though he did make fun of Smart\u2019s height. The Miami coach did have his own fair share of jokes at Smart\u2019s expense. <\/p>\n He pointed to the success Miami had with Carson Beck<\/a> as the team\u2019s quarterback this season, as the Hurricanes got to the national championship game after Beck transferred in from Georgia. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a great piece there to watch what a play like Carson Beck can do with great coaching,\u201d Cristobal said. <\/p>\n Cristobal also pointed to the unbeaten record Miami had against SEC teams last season, picking up wins over Florida, Texas A&M and Ole Miss. Georgia did win the SEC but lost to Alabama and Ole Miss during the season. <\/p>\n As a twist of the knife, Cristobal also mentioned that Smart\u2019s team was at home watching Miami, as the Bulldogs lost their first College Football Playoff game. Miami saw its season come to an end with a loss in the national championship game against Indiana. <\/p>\n Cristobal and Smart have a past history of working together, as they were both at Alabama from 2013 through 2015 together. Cristobal worked as the offensive line coach, while Smart was the team\u2019s defensive coordinator. <\/p>\n While Georgia and Miami didn\u2019t play each other last season, they did go head-to-head for a number of recruits. Miami landed five-star offensive lineman Jackson Cantwell,<\/a> while Georgia held on for four-star defensive back Tyriq Green. <\/a><\/p>\n The two schools have also traded players in the transfer portal beyond just Beck and former Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young. Former Miami defensive lineman Josh Horton will play for Georgia next season, while former Bulldogs Jamal Meriweather and Damon Wilson will suit up for Miami this fall. <\/p>\n Georgia and Miami aren\u2019t scheduled to play each other at this point.
