{"id":166700,"date":"2026-02-24T07:51:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T07:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/166700\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T07:51:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T07:51:12","slug":"usa-mens-hockey-welcomed-home-at-mia-after-olympics-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/166700\/","title":{"rendered":"USA men\u2019s hockey welcomed home at MIA after Olympics gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img class=\"responsive-image\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\"  alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>                Alie Skowronski<\/p>\n<p>            askowronski@miamiherald.com<\/p>\n<p>They walked into the international arrivals area of Miami International Airport on Monday afternoon in various Team USA gear \u2014 some in gray or blue hoodies or jackets, others in red T-shirts.<\/p>\n<p>The one piece of their outfits in common: The gold medal draped out their necks.<\/p>\n<p>Just more than 24 hours after winning those gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan with a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Canada on Sunday, the United States men\u2019s hockey team touched back down state-side, landing at Miami International Airport on Monday afternoon after a nearly 11-hour flight from Italy. The team was originally supposed to fly into the New York area, but plans changed due to the winter storm impacting the winter storm impacting the northeast.<\/p>\n<p>They are the first U.S. team to win gold at the Olympics in men\u2019s hockey since the \u201cMiracle on Ice\u201d team defeated the Soviet Union in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a whirlwind,\u201d said Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk, who was an alternate captain for Team USA and contributed six assists in the team\u2019s six games in Milan. \u201cIt\u2019s been amazing. It\u2019s a dream of ours. It\u2019s such an amazing way to unite the country. We felt the support being across the Atlantic and now being back on home soil. We could feel it the second the wheels hit the ground. Miami-Dade County mayor Daniella Levine Cava greeted the team as it disembarked. After the teamcleared customs, a crowd of fans was waiting to celebrate and give congratulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are just on Cloud 9, but they\u2019re also exhausted,\u201d Levine Cava said at the airport. \u201cVery, very happy to be home, and, of course, so thrilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thrilled, yes.<\/p>\n<p>But has the moment sunk in yet?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, not really,\u201d Team USA captain and Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews said. \u201cIt\u2019s surreal. I mean, I don\u2019t think we really realized the magnitude of just everything that was going to happen just because you\u2019re in it. You\u2019re living right in it.
