She was 91.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She planned meticulously, a checklist in hand. Christmas came with tasteful decorations and a turkey dinner; an outing in the boat required bologna sandwiches. She sent birthday cards to all her friends, and even the friends of her children, but her thank-you notes ranked most important of all. She raised four children with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raptisrarebooks.com\/product\/etiquette-emily-post-signed\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqAepGP-92VozIdPBozN93tMSuyh8wRT0NgQ8cEVtInouowzmxK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Emily Post\u2019s \u201cblue book\u201d<\/a> handy because it was important to teach the kids etiquette.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She served dinner at 5 p.m. Even her husband, physician Charlie Crist, made it most days because the time coincided with his office hours. She told her kids never to get too big for their britches, even when her son, Charlie, became the Governor of Florida.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/crist-nancy-scaled.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-781934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/crist-nancy-640x444.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\"  \/><\/a>Nancy and Dr. Charlie Crist share a moment in St. Petersburg in this undated photo. Nancy Crist died Monday at 91.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In all things, she kept a sure hand; the same woman who played classical piano once felled an elk with a single shot from hundreds of yards away. She taught her children to live balanced lives, to work hard, and to look for the best in others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was an attentive listener with bright blue eyes and an effortless charm; she saw the humorous side of things and laughed easily. That spirit of positive perseverance guided the family through blessings and losses, including the death of her eldest child, Margaret Wood, due to cancer in 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coalitionbettertogether.com\/?utm_source=flpolitics&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=btc25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-775900 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/BHM_Display_728x90_Unit_FL_Politics.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nancy Virginia Lee Crist was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Altoona, Pennsylvania. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/campus-life\/story\/may-day-penn-state-1914-celebrating-long-awaited-arrival-spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow external\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">At Penn State University, she was the Maypole Queen<\/a> \u2013 a shot of her posing in an ice blue strapless gown lives on \u2013 and met the love of her life, Charlie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They married Feb. 19, 1954. He earned a master\u2019s degree in biochemistry at Penn State. The couple then moved to Atlanta in 1956 so he could study at Emory University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The couple visited St. Petersburg, then fell in love with the water and the people and the pace; they moved here in 1960. Their instincts, as their children describe it, merged harmoniously in a yin-and-yang relationship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cShe was amazing,\u201d said Dr. Elizabeth Hyden Poore, her daughter. \u201cDad comes across as gregarious when you look at him, strong and robust. But in the quiet of our family, he would say, \u2018You know, your mother is the strong one here.\u2019 She was intelligent, a great listener, just present and dependable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The kids all had chores, inside and out; you had to do them, but then it was over. Their mother enjoyed sweets as much as they did; an entire drawer in the kitchen held candy, while another drawer held cookies. Bike rides were to be enjoyed together, but so were cocktails in moderation. The family could work together and celebrate together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anheuser-busch.com\/newsroom\/anheuser-busch-investing-in-jacksonville-facilities-to-drive-local-economic-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-772090 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Jacksonville_728x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sometimes they gathered around the piano in the living room, singing folk songs while their mother played; Dr. Crist accompanied on the banjo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mrs. Crist worked just as hard in the community and was active in the Junior League. She outlived her two younger sisters, Harriet and Marianne. The last several years were physically challenging, with a couple of strokes that left her in a wheelchair. She could still converse and never forgot to smile and blow a kiss when her husband sat across from her at the dinner table.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cShe maintained a positive spirit; she was very upbeat to the end,\u201d her son, Charlie Crist said. \u201cShe was almost miraculous, really, a wonderful mother and wife.
