{"id":168388,"date":"2026-02-25T10:45:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T10:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/168388\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T10:45:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T10:45:13","slug":"florida-bill-requires-booster-seats-for-8-year-old-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/168388\/","title":{"rendered":"Florida bill requires booster seats for 8-year-old children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 Among the hundreds of new Florida bills filed during this year\u2019s Legislative session, one proposal would mandate that parents put their 8-year-old children in booster seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The bill \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=82762\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=82762\">HB 233<\/a> \u2014 was filed back in October by state Rep. Nan Cobb (R-Eustis), and it aims to modify the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0316\/Sections\/0316.613.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0316\/Sections\/0316.613.html\">child restraint requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Under current law, children who are 5 years old and younger are required to be strapped into an approved child restraint device in a car. With few exceptions, those rules break down as follows:<\/p>\n<p>For children aged through 3 years: The restraint device must be a separate carrier or a vehicle manufacturer\u2019s integrated child seat.<\/p>\n<p>For children aged 4-5 years: A separate carrier, an integrated child seat, or a child booster seat may be used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">[BELOW: Florida Gov. DeSantis signs bill banning fluoride in water]<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, HB 233 would add another rule to that list for children aged 6-8 years, who must be placed in a child booster seat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That said, the requirement doesn\u2019t apply to any children who are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">As of Tuesday, the bill hasn\u2019t made much headway, as it still needs to pass through two committees before it can go for a full House vote.
