PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 Monday evening Port St Lucie City leaders took a stand on development. During a commission meeting council members voted against a proposal which would have allowed for approximately 1,300 homes to be built near Glades Cut Off Road.<\/p>\n
Applicant requested that nearly 400 acres of land near C-24 Canal Road be rezoned to low density residential for the development. <\/p>\n
See Also: Viral TikTok: Florida family pulled over in rental car with wrong tag, no insurance<\/a><\/p>\n Currently, the Lulfs Grove land use has been designated as followed:<\/p>\n 90 acres of Commercial Service\/Light Industrial\/Heavy Industrial (CS\/LI\/HI)<\/p>\n 311.50 acres of Commercial Service\/ Light Industrial\/Residential, Office and Institutional (CS\/LI\/ROI)<\/p>\n and 63 acres of Commercial General\/Residential, Office and Institutional (CG\/ROI)<\/p>\n The Astoria Proposed Land Use which would nearly triple the amount of homes that could be built is as followed:<\/p>\n 397.89 acres of Low Density Residential (RL)<\/p>\n 34.25 acres of General Commercial\/ Commercial Service\/Institutional (CG\/CS\/I)<\/p>\n 13.93 acres of Open Space Recreation ( OSR)<\/p>\n 18.43 acres of Open Space Conservation (OSC)<\/p>\n However, in a unanimous vote councilmembers voted “no” and instead opted to keep the current land use in place, which only allows for about 500 units.<\/p>\n \u201cSitting up here the five of us do not get much opportunity to say no to growth but we do today,” said City of Port St Lucie Councilman David Pickett. “By us voting no today we\u2019re pushing back and we are capping what the city had as far as rooftops.\u201d<\/p>\n Elected officials said the city already has agreements with three developers that were put in place nearly 20 years ago. By law, those are agreements cannot be nulled, but any changes or future development can be rejected.<\/p>\n City of Port St Lucie Mayor Shannon Martin said residents are asking for less development.<\/p>\n \u201cOur residents have told us that they want us to stop growth or to control growth better and we\u2019re doing exactly what our residents want us to do,” Martin said. <\/p>\n Despite the decision, Port St Lucie remains one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation.<\/p>\n Find more ways to stay up to date with your latest local news.
