TAMPA – As Black History Month<\/a> comes to a close, work is already well underway on a lasting tribute to the community\u2019s legacy: the Tampa<\/a> Black History Museum.<\/p>\n Though the museum\u2019s doors won\u2019t open until 2027, curators are working behind the scenes now to build the exhibits \u2014 and they\u2019re turning to the public for help.<\/p>\n The goal is to tell Tampa\u2019s story through personal artifacts belonging to the very people who shaped it.<\/p>\n For Clemmie Perry, donating pieces of her family\u2019s history felt like the natural next step in preserving her parents\u2019 legacy.<\/p>\n Her mother, Doris Ross Reddick, made history as the first African American woman to chair the Hillsborough County School Board.\u00a0<\/p>\n Among the items donated were replicas of Reddick\u2019s 1946 Miss Bethune-Cookman crown and sash \u2014 treasured keepsakes that had long been stored safely at home.<\/p>\n Perry said she didn\u2019t learn Black history from textbooks or online searches.<\/p>\n “I learned it at the dining room table,” she said.<\/p>\n When museum curators reached out, she and her family didn\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n “It wasn\u2019t even a second thought,” Perry said. “We knew we had to get it out of the china cabinet\u2026 It was just a way of preserving their history and making sure it would be in a safe place.”<\/p>\n Big picture view:<\/p>\n Curator Fred Hearns, who has been working to grow the collection for the past two years, says building the museum means building a comprehensive record of Tampa\u2019s Black history.<\/p>\n “We want to tell as much Tampa Black history as we can,” Hearns said.<\/p>\n READ: Tampa athlete hosting 60K to benefit St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital<\/a><\/p>\n Unlike other museums that may acquire pieces through auctions, many of the artifacts destined for this museum are deeply personal \u2014 stored in family albums, scrapbooks and cabinets across the region.<\/p>\n Hearns is encouraging residents in Tampa and greater Hillsborough County<\/a> to look through family photos, documents, awards and memorabilia connected to loved ones who made a difference in the Black community.<\/p>\n He acknowledges that donating personal belongings can be difficult.<\/p>\n “But do you want to share them with the world?” he asked.<\/p>\n Curators say each donation will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
