TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Southside Transit Center was delayed because a steel beam frame was installed incorrectly, according to the City of Tallahassee\u2019s Construction Manager John Powell.<\/p>\n
Powell said the error would be at no cost to taxpayers. <\/p>\n
However, the construction manager said the general contractor has since then fired the subcontractor and correct work is currently underway.<\/p>\n
Powell added that while the delay is frustrating, it\u2019s actually an example of the process working. He said the city\u2019s independent architect and code compliance department noticed the steel was too small.<\/p>\n
WCTV previously reported earlier this year<\/a> that the Southside Transit Center was behind schedule, as it was scheduled to be completed at the end of 2025. <\/p>\n More Tallahassee News<\/p>\n However, Powell said the project will now be finished sometime this year due to the steel issue delaying the project by \u201cmonths.\u201d<\/p>\n The Southside Transit Center is an important project for Florida\u2019s Capital City. City officials, such as City Commissioner Curtis Richardson, previously said most users of the bus system are actually based on the southside, instead of downtown, where the current terminal is located.<\/p>\n Plus, the city has previously said the transit center will allow new routes and a larger project in the area will include stormwater improvements alongside others.<\/p>\n Tune in to Eyewitness News at 5 and 6 for the full story.
