(WCTV\/Florida Capital Bureau) &#8211; Floridians may soon have to round up when paying cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Florida Senate unanimously passed a bill that will round up all cash payments to the nearest nickel or dime. This would not apply to any card or digital transactions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The bill comes after the U.S. Mint stopped production of pennies in November last year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-center article-text\">More Florida politics:<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">According to the Secretary of the Treasury, the penny is no longer necessary to meet the needs of the United States. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/media-kit\/penny?srsltid=AfmBOoqoWXxLVE8jMu80S8x2X8SRwPXZQudVx31ZohLYmM8Q65pcZKtA#accordion-021891a14e-item-3325e32d15\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.usmint.gov\/news\/media-kit\/penny?srsltid=AfmBOoqoWXxLVE8jMu80S8x2X8SRwPXZQudVx31ZohLYmM8Q65pcZKtA#accordion-021891a14e-item-3325e32d15\">website<\/a> maintains that the penny remains usable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lawmakers are preparing for what they see as a \u201cpenniless society.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Senator Don Gaetz, the bill sponsor, spoke about the trajectory of the nation\u2019s economy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cSo now we\u2019re moving towards a penniless society economy, and this bill provides some guidance to let retailers know how to proceed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The bill is awaiting a vote by the House.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 WCTV.
