FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. \u2014 It\u2019s a milestone year for the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary by honoring a comedy legend who has spent five decades making audiences laugh.<\/p>\n
Chevy Chase was in Fort Lauderdale to receive the festival\u2019s Lifetime Achievement Award. But the night wasn\u2019t just about looking back at his career — it also highlighted a new personal project.<\/p>\n
The festival hosted the premiere of \u201cI\u2019m Chevy Chase and You\u2019re Not,\u201d a documentary that examines what it calls the \u201cgenius and self-destruction\u201d behind the actor\u2019s trademark smirk. <\/p>\n
The film takes an unfiltered look at Chase\u2019s rise, his impact on comedy and the personal struggles that shaped his career.<\/p>\n
Director Marina Zenovich said the goal was to present a full portrait of the man behind the fame.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was kind enough to give me the time and I\u2019m not really sure why he did it, but I think he wants to understand himself more,\u201d Zenovich said. \u201cSo even though he pushed back, I feel like he gave me as much as he was willing to, which was the lie.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chase\u2019s family was on hand for the celebration, including his daughter, Sydney, and his wife, Jayni, who joined him for the red carpet event.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe laughter that he brings to me from my family,\u201d said Sydney Chase. \u201cAnd I mean, at the moment he wakes up, he\u2019s saying funny things. He\u2019s not even trying.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see, you know, to see him on screen and get all those clips from his work and understand and hear our friends and people talk about him on camera and my daughters,\u201d said Jayni Chase.<\/p>\n
