JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 The University of North Florida\u2019s new esports and innovation arena, The Flight Deck, opens to students at 10 a.m. Tuesday, marking a major step in the school\u2019s plan to expand technology learning and strengthen the region\u2019s future workforce.<\/p>\n
The project was supported in part by a $3 million investment from the city, approved by the Jacksonville City Council. <\/p>\n
University leaders say the arena will help position Jacksonville as a competitive hub for digital innovation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a significant milestone for our university and the entire community,\u201d said Moez Limayem, president of the University of North Florida. <\/p>\n
He thanked Mayor Donna Deegan and city lawmakers for backing a project that he says will help attract students interested in science, computing, and engineering.<\/p>\n
The Flight Deck is located on the second floor of the John A. Delaney Student Union, above the campus bookstore. <\/p>\n
The space includes 42 high-performance PC gaming stations, a full competition stage, a broadcast studio for livestreaming and content creation, and a console gaming area. <\/p>\n
It also connects to an adjacent auditorium for large tournaments and spectator seating.<\/p>\n
University officials say the arena is designed not only for esports events but also to support STEM programs and hands-on learning opportunities. <\/p>\n
The esports industry is projected to surpass $6.3 billion by 2030, and UNF leaders believe that growth will help draw national competitions \u2014 and economic activity \u2014 to Jacksonville.<\/p>\n
The Flight Deck is part of UNF\u2019s broader strategy to increase enrollment and support the region\u2019s workforce needs. <\/p>\n
According to the university, 80% of graduates stay in Florida, and 70% remain in Northeast Florida, supplying local industries with new talent in high-demand fields.<\/p>\n
The facility is expected to host major collegiate competitions once it becomes fully operational next year.<\/p>\n
