CORAL GABLES, Fla. \u2014 A Coral Gables man was arrested Friday by the Florida Department of Financial Services after investigators said he fraudulently cashed his deceased father\u2019s workers\u2019 compensation checks over several years.<\/p>\n
According to an arrest report, Todd Luis Calderin, 44, was his father\u2019s caretaker and managed his father\u2019s workers\u2019 comp benefits. <\/p>\n
Authorities said his father, Joe Calderin, had sustained a serious back injury while employed by the city of Hialeah and was receiving benefits totaling more than $800,000 over his lifetime. <\/p>\n
Joe Calderin passed away on Aug. 1, 2021, but investigators said Todd Calderin continued to cash the checks, totaling $63,408, without notifying the insurance company or the city.<\/p>\n
The Department of Financial Services\u2019 investigation included witness interviews, photographic evidence, and recorded statements. <\/p>\n
They said Todd Calderin admitted to taking the funds and initially promised to repay the money, but he failed to formalize any repayment agreement or make payments.<\/p>\n
Jail records show he is facing one count each of organized scheme to defraud more than $50,000, second-degree grand theft between $20,000 and $100,000, forgery of a check, and uttering a forged instrument on a check. <\/p>\n
As of Friday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where his bond was listed as \u201cto be set.\u201d <\/p>\n
