\n\t\t\t\t\t\tA national award-winning campaign is turning the tables on parents and helping teens become leaders in safe driving.The Ground Your Parents kit by the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition encourages parents to set a good example by leading with safe driving habits.Here is how it works:A school administrator or an individual teen orders the kit.Once a teen(s) receives it, they can start using the material inside to remind their mom, dad or guardian of safe driving habits and to hold them accountable.The free kit even includes a report card.”Depending on how the parent does \u2014 it’s a pass\/fail grade \u2014 they can start grounding them and issuing different citations,” Melissa Hamrick said.Hamrick works with the coalition and started the campaign after talking to teens at different tabling events across the state.She would ask, \u201cYou know not to use your phone while driving, right?\u201d and said the kids would often say yes, yet would add, “‘But you know who\u2019s the worst at that? My mom!'”The kit also includes sticky notes to leave safe driving reminders in unconventional places, like the fridge and in the bathroom.Kids can reward parents, for example, by doing chores, for their good driving habits. Last year, students in South Florida, from Masters Academy in Vero Beach to Park Vista High in Lake Worth and Royal Palm Beach High School, participated.Hamrick said one kit can serve up to 200 students. She also had one message for parents.”Parents, you have the power to make safe and smart decisions behind the wheel. Your teen is watching you,” she said. “Please buckle up.
