{"id":172676,"date":"2026-02-28T09:51:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T09:51:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/172676\/"},"modified":"2026-02-28T09:51:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T09:51:15","slug":"south-florida-banker-victimized-customers-in-1-3-million-fraud-scheme-feds-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/172676\/","title":{"rendered":"South Florida banker victimized customers in $1.3 million fraud scheme, feds say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. \u2014 A former South Florida personal banker worked in concert with scammers in a seven-figure wire fraud scheme targeting unsuspecting customers, authorities allege.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/02\/27\/banquero-del-sur-de-florida-estafo-a-clientes-en-esquema-de-fraude-por-13-millones-usd-dicen-federales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/espanol\/2026\/02\/27\/banquero-del-sur-de-florida-estafo-a-clientes-en-esquema-de-fraude-por-13-millones-usd-dicen-federales\/\">Leer en espa\u00f1ol<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Officials said Ana Dalila Vega was aware she was under investigation and had booked a one-way flight to Nicaragua set to depart Thursday. Instead, on Thursday, federal agents arrested her and took her to the Broward County jail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Vega, 33, of Hollywood, is now facing a bank fraud conspiracy charge in Fort Lauderdale federal court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to a federal criminal complaint authored by a special agent with the U.S. Secret Service, Vega was employed by Citibank from October 2017 to January 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Authorities said in 2023, Vega began communicating with a man she met in her apartment building who \u201csold drugs\u201d and knew she worked at Citibank and he recruited her to help with fraudulent bank activity. He\u2019s identified in the complaint as \u201cCo-Conspirator 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Vega, authorities allege, \u201cadmitted that she agreed to help Co-Conspirator 1 by unblocking certain Citibank accounts, adding authorized signers to Citibank accounts and transferring funds between accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the complaint, she told investigators when she asked him \u201cwhy he was sending people to her to unblock the accounts and transfer money,\u201d he responded, \u201cThe less you know, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the complaint, authorities included a photo of text messages they said Vega showed them showing a conversation between her and Co-Conspirator 1 (illustration below):<\/p>\n<p>\nYeah and i just hit you up to zelle me and you go off the rails because i stated facts.<\/p>\n<p>-We agreed on a number<br \/>\n-you came by short<br \/>\n-not a man of word.<\/p>\n<p>Business is business.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Y\u2019all. Was post to get 4000<\/p>\n<p>See now you talking too much<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Authorities said in March 2023, Vega facilitated a $60,000 unauthorized wire transfer from a customer\u2019s account to an account called \u201cGETTHEBREAD LLC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Throughout 2023, investigators said, Vega agreed to help unblock accounts, add unauthorized signers and process transfers for people sent to her by the co-conspirator. She later admitted she knew the money did not belong to the people accessing the accounts and that she was paid several thousand dollars in cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Authorities said in December 2023, she worked with a second co-conspirator to defraud a customer out of $1.3 million through multiple transactions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the complaint, Vega\u2019s statements to law enforcement came after law enforcement interviews in November and on Feb. 11, where she \u201cinitially denied engaging in any fraudulent activity and denied knowing Co-Conspirator 1,\u201d but then \u201cadmitted to her criminal conduct\u201d after being \u201cconfronted with evidence of her involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the Feb. 11 interview, agents said Vega told investigators that Co-Conspirator 1 sent her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdfl\/pr\/miami-man-arrested-multimillion-dollar-bank-fraud-scheme-targeting-dozens-victims\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdfl\/pr\/miami-man-arrested-multimillion-dollar-bank-fraud-scheme-targeting-dozens-victims\">a U.S. Department of Justice news release<\/a> about a Miami bank fraud arrest for conduct similar to what they were engaging in and \u201cadvised her to be careful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to the complaint, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security alerted agents that on Feb. 17, Vega \u201cbooked a one-way ticket to Nicaragua\u201d set to depart on Thursday with no return trip booked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Agents said they called Vega on Monday and asked if she could meet with them on Thursday or Friday.
