TAMPA, Fla.\u00a0\u2014 As the nation celebrates\u00a0Hispanic Heritage Month, Tampa native\u00a0Sylvia Alvarez\u00a0is being recognized for her lasting impact on housing equity and financial education across the region.<\/p>\n

Alvarez is the\u00a0CEO and founder of the Housing & Education Alliance, Inc. (HEA)<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a nonprofit that has helped thousands of families navigate the complex path to homeownership.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love what I do. I change people\u2019s lives. I make dreams come true,\u201d Alvarez said.<\/p>\n

Her inspiration began at home. Alvarez was just a child when her parents, who emigrated from\u00a0Cuba, bought their first house in Tampa. That experience, she says, shaped her passion for helping others find stability through homeownership.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing from Cuba, if you owned your home, that was something. But to own a home in America \u2014 that was really an achievement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Under her leadership, the\u00a0Housing & Education Alliance\u00a0has helped families access\u00a0more than $160 million in down payment assistance\u00a0and avoid\u00a0predatory loans\u00a0through HUD-certified homebuyer classes.<\/p>\n

During the 2008 housing crash, Alvarez and her team worked tirelessly to keep families in their homes \u2014 even while losing their own.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe saved 14,000 Tampa Bay area homes from foreclosure,\u201d Alvarez recalled. \u201cWe took solace in that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her office walls tell the story of her impact \u2014 awards from\u00a0UnidosUS,\u00a0PBS\/WEDU, and the\u00a0Tampa Bay Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, among others, honor her leadership and community service.<\/p>\n

Through her work, Alvarez continues to inspire future homeowners \u2014 especially within the Hispanic community \u2014 to build generational wealth and stability.<\/p>\n
