MIAMI \u2014 The city of Miami honored its outgoing mayor on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Mayor Francis Suarez, who is termed out, was given a key to the city. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe has elevated Miami to international status,\u201d said Miami Chairwoman and District 5 Commissioner Christine King. \u201cThank you, and know that you always have this key to this city.\u201d <\/p>\n

Suarez thanked the people of Miami, his wife, children and his father, former mayor Xavier Suarez who is currently running in the mayoral race once again<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Prior to the ceremony, Miami Police Department Chief Manny Morales gifted Suarez with customized cigars. <\/p>\n

Suarez\u2019s term as Mayor is coming to an end following the 3rd DCA\u2019s decision to overturn a commission vote to move municipal elections from odd to even years<\/a> which would have moved this November\u2019s election giving him an extra year in office. <\/p>\n

The lawsuit was filed by mayoral candidate and former city manager Emilio Gonzalez<\/a>, who said the ordinance passed by commission was unlawful and disenfranchised voters and candidates. <\/p>\n

In 2023, after failing to qualify for the first Republican presidential debate<\/a>, Suarez suspended his race for the White House.<\/p>\n
