LUCIE \u2014 The Mets have opened the door for Carson Benge to make the Opening Day roster.<\/p>\n<p>Whether he takes it will likely be determined over the next few weeks, as Benge, who turned 23 in January, adjusts to facing major league-level pitching after just one full season in the minors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept getting better last year and seemed up to any challenge the Mets put in front of him,\u2019\u2019 a National League scout said of the lefty-swinging Benge this spring. \u201cAnd so far, he\u2019s looked the part here. But there\u2019s a lot that goes into a decision like that and only they\u2019ll know if he\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benge has been high on the Mets\u2019 radar for longer than just about any team \u2014 well before they selected him with the 19th pick in the 2024 draft.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"PORT ST.
