He grabbed the lead in Lap 42 out of 100 and didn\u2019t let go until the checkered flag waved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He finished 12.4948 seconds ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/Drivers\/Scott-McLaughlin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Scott McLaughlin<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/crowsneststpete.com\/2026\/02\/28\/scott-mclaughlin-takes-pole-at-indycar-qualifying-johnson-finishes-top-two\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">took pole<\/a> in qualifying on Feb. 28, for the largest margin of victory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/crowsneststpete.com\/2026\/02\/28\/how-the-firestone-grand-prix-came-to-st-pete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">history<\/a> of the street circuit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Palou] uses guard base and gets track position,\u201d McLaughlin said in a post-race press conference. \u201cObviously, I think the correct decision today was probably to start with red tires, but we didn\u2019t know that going in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed\u201d or \u201csoft\u201d tires are used exclusively for street courses. They get up to racing temperature, or the optimal level of grip, much quicker than other tire compounds. That extra speed is essential on street courses like St. Petersburg, where track position is essential. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed\u201d tires can also be changed more often than the \u201chard\u201d or \u201cblack\u201d tires, which last longer and are more durable. However, drivers who put a set of hard tires on in a pit stop are at a disadvantage because they are going to be much slower than drivers on track when coming out of the pit lane. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Palou did not switch to hard tires until the end of Lap 67.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His tire and pit stop strategy allowed him to get ahead of McLaughlin, who had been leading the race for 34 laps before he pitted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Firestone-2026-Saturday-15-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34219\"  \/>After falling from first place, Scott McLaughlin, in his No.3 DEX Team Penske Chevrolet, was able to claw his way to second, but could not catch up to Palou.<br \/>Photo by Makenna Wozniak | The Crow\u2019s Nest<\/p>\n<p>McLaughlin was not the only driver to have tire trouble. In the opening laps, David Malukas made a braking error\u00a0that rubbed a flat spot into his front left tire. A few laps later, the tire gave out and Malukas had to duck down an escape road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He then fell a lap behind the leading cars, but good strategy and a solid recovery drive allowed for Malukas to climb back into 13th place. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After grabbing the lead and holding it for two laps, Scott Dixon\u2019s right rear tire rolled off going into Turn 4. The runaway tire was the result of a bad pit stop; it ended the race for Dixon. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was the fourth driver who did not finish the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the first lap, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/Drivers\/Sting-Ray-Robb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sting Ray Robb<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/Drivers\/Santino-Ferrucci\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Santino Ferrucci<\/a> collided at Turn 4. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They both went into the barriers, but Robb was able to repair his car in a lengthy pit stop and finish the race. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/Drivers\/Mick-Schumacher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mick Schumacher<\/a>, unable to avoid the crash, collided with Ferrucci and ended the race for both drivers. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was suspense surrounding new Andretti driver <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/Drivers\/Will-Power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Will Power<\/a> before his first race with the team after a 17-year stint with Team Penske. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Suspension, however, ended Power\u2019s race on Lap 21 when his right rear suspension was damaged after grazing the wall on Turn 10 \u2014 the same spot where he crashed during the second practice session. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He returned to the pit lane for lengthy repairs and fell 31 laps behind the field.
