{"id":176865,"date":"2026-03-03T21:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T21:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/176865\/"},"modified":"2026-03-03T21:45:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T21:45:07","slug":"annual-usfsp-night-walk-aims-to-improve-campus-safety-the-crows-nest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/176865\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual USFSP night walk aims to improve campus safety\u00a0 \u2013 The Crow&#8217;s Nest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The safety walk hosted attendees from numerous areas on campus, such as housing, facilities, event management, and more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Photo courtesy of Kevin Sullivan<\/p>\n<p>By Julia Ferrara\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Staff, faculty and even students got a say in what should be improved for campus on Feb. 19.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thirty people from various campus departments, including several students gathered to conduct the annual University of South Florida St. Petersburg Night Safety Walk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attendees were split up into several groups and given charts to collect data on areas around campus that need attention. They were asked to look for things like uneven sidewalks, overgrown foliage, exposed wires, lighting issues and anything else that could pose a risk to staff and students.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_1492-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34244\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500101903558473;width:479px;height:auto\"  \/>Non-functioning or lack of lightning was one of the biggest issues noted by participants of this event. <br \/>Photo by Julia Ferrara | The Crow\u2019s Nest<\/p>\n<p>The event ran for almost two hours and revealed several dozen concerns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David Hendry, the regional chief of police for USF St. Petersburg, said the walk has been held for over a decade and serves as an opportunity to find any safety deficiencies that need to be improved on.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur facilities department addresses each of the issues one by one and that\u2019s one of the many ways that we keep our campus safe,\u201d Hendry said. \u201cThe facilities folks stay so busy sometimes that they may not see something [safety concern], so this safety walk is very helpful in terms of pointing those things out.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_1476-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34243\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500132268133961;width:458px;height:auto\"  \/>Having participants from various areas of the university allowed for more comprehensive findings.
