Some people say MCO, which is the airport\u2019s official code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But the airport wants to make sure you know \u2014 it\u2019s MCO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In fact, they have tweeted about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The airport\u2019s MCO designation is rooted in its military past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Orlando International Airport was originally a military base dating as far back as the 1940s, when it was Pinecastle Army Airfield. In 1958, it was renamed McCoy Air Force Base after Colonel Michael McCoy, who was killed during a bombing competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The civilian airport was designated MCO after the base name, and even though the military base closed in 1975, those letters haven\u2019t changed. The airport became Orlando International in 1976.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If you ask people around Orlando though, the preference is divided, and if you Google \u201cOIA,\u201d the airport is the first thing to pop up, followed by Oia, a village in Greece, and the Outdoor Industry Association.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOIA is a popular name,\u201d said airport spokesperson Carolyn Fennell. \u201cBut there is already an airport that has that name in Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Airport codes are designated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/publications\/directories\/code-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">International Air Transport Association<\/a>, a trade group for the air travel industry that governs a number of airport policies. These location identifier codes are supposed to make communication easier for pilots, air traffic controllers and other parts of the travel industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Each three-letter designation is unique to the airport for convenience reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the case of \u201cOIA,\u201d it already stands for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/publications\/directories\/code-search\/?airport.search=oia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ouril\u00e2ndia do Norte Airport<\/a> \u2013 an airport in Brazil that is now closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere are nearly 9,000 airport codes and to make a change would require a lot of coordination,\u201d Fennell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Fennell said the airport has made MCO part of its marketing to get people to think of the airport by those letters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">So do you call the airport OIA or MCO?<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2023 by WKMG ClickOrlando &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 What\u2019s your nickname for Orlando International Airport?
