ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) \u2014 Residents near the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant should not be alarmed when the facility\u2019s outdoor warning sirens sound at noon Thursday, March 5. The test is part of the plant\u2019s routine quarterly safety checks.<\/p>\n

Martin County\u2019s Emergency Management Agency<\/a>, the St. Lucie County Department of Public Safety<\/a>, and Florida Power & Light <\/a>will activate all 91 sirens within the plant\u2019s 10-mile emergency planning zone. Officials say the 1,132-acre St. Lucie site, located on Hutchinson Island along A1A between Stuart and Fort Pierce, houses two nuclear units.<\/p>\n

Each siren will sound for about one minute. Before and after the test, a message will broadcast through the sirens\u2019 public address system stating, \u201cThis is only a test.\u201d Siren tests occur in March, June, September, and December to make sure the system functions properly and to maintain public awareness.<\/p>\n

Officials say in the unlikely event of an actual emergency, sirens would sound for at least five minutes, with official instructions provided on local radio and television.<\/p>\n
