Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor is coordinating a memorial service for the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Baptist minister, civil rights leader and two-time presidential candidate who died Feb. 17 at age 84.<\/p>\n

Jackson had been to Tallahassee many times over the years<\/a> and this week residents can come together for the Reverend Jesse Jackson Memorial Service from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 224, N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.<\/p>\n

Proctor, who is coordinating the event, sent out a letter to alert the community about the service in which “church leaders, civic organizations, community and elected leaders will gather to pay tribute to one of the longest serving and most impactful Civil Rights voices spanning six decades.”<\/p>\n

Prominent community leaders will give reflections upon the significance of Jackson\u2019s life and legacy on American society, Proctor said. The Rev. R.B. Holmes and Reverend Stanley Walker, a South Carolina native, will give keynote tributes as Tallahasseeans join together for this community memorial service.<\/p>\n
