MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 The Martin County School District<\/a> is weighing new restrictions on electric bikes on school campuses as concerns grow about safety, speed and injuries involving students.<\/p>\n

During a school board workshop this week, district leaders discussed several possible policy changes that could limit who can bring and operate e-bikes on school property.<\/p>\n

One proposal under consideration would allow students to bring an e-bike<\/a> to campus only if they are at least 16 years old, have a driver license and wear a helmet.<\/p>\n

School board members said the goal is to address safety concerns while still allowing older students to use the devices responsibly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe get buzzed every morning when we\u2019re out walking,\u201d one board member said during the discussion, referring to fast-moving e-bikes traveling on sidewalks near schools.<\/p>\n

Officials said some of the biggest risks involve students riding at high speeds through intersections or near pedestrians.<\/p>\n

Sheriff\u2019s office supports stronger limits<\/p>\n

A representative from the Martin County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> told the board law enforcement supports policies limiting e-bike use on school campuses, particularly among younger students.<\/p>\n

Lieutenant David Rosko said deputies frequently see injuries involving riders who are not wearing helmets or who fail to follow traffic rules.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the injuries we see are a result of no helmets,\u201d Rosko told the board.<\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office is also working with the region\u2019s transportation planners to explore countywide restrictions on e-bike use for riders under 16.<\/p>\n

Confusion over different types of electric bikes<\/p>\n

Officials also discussed confusion surrounding the different types of electric bikes students are riding.<\/p>\n

Under Florida law,<\/a> a legal e-bike must have working pedals, a motor of 750 watts or less, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 miles per hour.<\/p>\n

However, deputies say many students are riding electric motorcycles \u2014 sometimes called \u201ce-motos\u201d \u2014 which can reach speeds of up to 80 miles per hour and are not legal to operate on sidewalks or roads.<\/p>\n

Those vehicles are only allowed on private property.<\/p>\n

Policy still being developed<\/p>\n

District staff will now work with student services officials and legal staff to refine the policy language before bringing it back to the board for further consideration.<\/p>\n

Board members said they want a policy finalized before the next school year so the rules can be included in the district\u2019s student code of conduct.<\/p>\n

The discussion comes as lawmakers in Tallahassee consider legislation that could also limit e-bike use by riders under 16 statewide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"MARTIN COUNTY, Fla.
