The Chabad of Winter Garden, recently brought to the community by Rabbi Mendy and Sheina Konikov, hosted a Purim celebration Tuesday, March 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Purim is a holiday celebrating the salvation of Jews from a mass killing in ancient Persia, modern-day Iran, as recounted by the Book of Esther, also known as the Megillah.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people gathered at the event to chat, celebrate the holiday, eat good food and have fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The theme for this year\u2019s event was \u201cPurim in the Stadium,\u201d where people attended in sports costumes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Costumes are a tradition for this holiday, signifying God being hidden, making the miracle seem almost within nature, Mendy Konikov explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t see God coming down from heaven and giving Ten Commandments, but we realize that it\u2019s really God behind everything,\u201d Mendy Konikov said. \u201cWe have to remember that if we are in a certain place, that means we\u2019re here for a reason.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Attendees also enjoyed breakdancers, a modern photo-booth and loads of good music.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mendy Konikov wants the dozens of children who attended the event to know they shouldn\u2019t be ashamed to be Jewish.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is who we are,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026We shouldn\u2019t bow down to the evil forces. \u2026We just have to show the world what it means to truly be Jewish and live in God\u2019s ways.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
