{"id":179220,"date":"2026-03-05T13:21:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T13:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/179220\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T13:21:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T13:21:13","slug":"hegseth-to-get-iran-operations-update-at-macdill-thursday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/179220\/","title":{"rendered":"Hegseth to get Iran operations update at MacDill Thursday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAMPA, Fla. \u2014\u00a0 U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will visit MacDill Air Force base in Tampa on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth will visit headquarters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Central Command<\/a>, which is overseeing military operations in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Hegesth will meet with Centcom commander Adm. Brad Cooper for an update on Operation Epic Fury, which started a week ago.<\/p>\n<p>Hegseth\u2019s visit comes just a day after a U.S. submarine <a href=\"https:\/\/baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/international\/2026\/03\/04\/iran-war-us-israeli-bombardment-iran-mideast-infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">took out an Iranian warship<\/a>. It was the first time a U.S. sub torpedoed an enemy ship since World War II.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S.-Israeli blitz is continuing in Iran Thursday \u2014 an operation President Donald Trump said could be ongoing for weeks.<\/p>\n<p>So far, government officials say the operation has killed as many as 40 top military and political leaders in Iran, and hit more than 2,000 targets on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. officials said the mission has been a success so far, but it hasn\u2019t come without a cost. Earlier this week, six American troops were killed during an Iranian drone strike on a command center in Kuwait, and one was identified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/baynews9.com\/fl\/tampa\/news\/2026\/03\/03\/winter-haven-soldier-among-6-u-s--service-members-killed-in-iran-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">as Winter Haven resident Capt. Cody Khork<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bay News 9 spoke remotely with Army Sgt. 1st Class Brian Kockendorfer in Tennessee, who served with Khork in the 810th\u00a0Military Police Company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing somebody personally, you\u2019ve gotten to work with them, that\u2019s when it hits,\u201d Kochendorfer said. \u201cIt hits home very directly. Look, I\u2019m going to start tearing up, that\u2019s how close you get to people you work with, particularly Cody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the military strikes move forward in Iran, Trump has said that American troops will not have to be deployed on the ground.
