PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 A garbage truck fire erupted in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday, prompting a firefighting response after the driver\u2019s desperate attempt to contain the blaze was thwarted by a malfunctioning rear gate.<\/p>\n

The St. Lucie County Fire District<\/a> said that crews responded to the garbage truck fire on Wednesday near the intersection of Selvitz Road and St. James Drive in Port St. Lucie. <\/p>\n

It was reported that upon arrival, firefighters discovered that the garbage truck’s load was on fire. <\/p>\n

Officials said that the driver had attempted to dump the burning load to prevent the flames from spreading, but the rear gate of the truck malfunctioned and wouldn\u2019t open.<\/p>\n

With help from a tow truck, it was reported that firefighters managed to lift the rear gate, enabling them to remove the burning debris. <\/p>\n

The fire was brought under control, ensuring that no further damage was done to the truck or the surrounding area.<\/p>\n
