{"id":179649,"date":"2026-03-05T19:13:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T19:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/179649\/"},"modified":"2026-03-05T19:13:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T19:13:08","slug":"local-sophomore-raises-7500-so-students-can-get-free-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/179649\/","title":{"rendered":"Local sophomore raises $7,500 so students can get free books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PINE HILLS, Fla. \u2014\u00a0A Lake Highland Preparatory School sophomore is helping <a href=\"https:\/\/pinehillses.ocps.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pine Hills Elementary School<\/a> students take home new books they might not otherwise be able to afford.<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Lake Highland sophomore, Helena Madsen, raised more than $7,000 through her tax-deductible nonprofit, The Giving Shelf<\/p>\n<p>The money helped about 650 students at Pine Hills Elementary take home books from the school\u2019s Scholastic Book Fair<\/p>\n<p>School leaders say early access to books builds confidence and supports learning across subjects<\/p>\n<p>30% to 40% of book fair sales go back to the school to help fill the library and purchase equipment<\/p>\n<p>Helena Madsen, a 10th grader and founder of the tax-deductible nonprofit 501(c)(3), <a href=\"https:\/\/thegivingshelf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Giving Shelf<\/a>, raised $7,500 to cover the cost of books for about 650 students during the school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bookfairs.scholastic.com\/content\/fairs\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Scholastic Book Fair<\/a>, which ran from Feb. 23 through March 2.<\/p>\n<p>Madsen said her love for book fairs growing up inspired her to step in once she realized not every child gets the same opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was older, I realized that not every kid gets that opportunity, and I wanted to change that,\u201d Madsen said.<\/p>\n<p>Pine Hills Elementary Assistant Principal Stefanie Gray said the school serves a community where many families are facing financial hardship, making access to books especially important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the poverty level in our area, it\u2019s hard for students to get access,\u201d Gray said. \u201cSo, any chance we get to get an opportunity for our kids to get books, we\u2019re here for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gray also said early access to books helps students build a foundation that supports learning across subjects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s very crucial, especially from kindergarten level, for students to have books in their hands,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The impact extends beyond free books for students.
