TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The NAACP Tallahassee branch hosted a press conference Thursday to announce a report that\u2019s critical of the City of Tallahassee\u2019s proposed transfer of the community hospital to Florida State University. <\/p>\n
Former Mayor Jack McClean said the agreement between the city and FSU does not reflect the people\u2019s interests. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis agreement does not protect poor people,\u201d McClean said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have financial [protections].\u201d<\/p>\n
McClean also said that FSU President Richard McCullough told him that he \u201cdoesn\u2019t trust the city.\u201d <\/p>\n
McClean has also spoken to an influential player from Grow Tallahassee, Bugra Demirel, who supports the deal. However, McClean said that even supporters fear state control.<\/p>\n
The Tallahassee NAACP has expressed concerns about the TMH transfer over the past several months with joint town halls<\/a>, campaigns<\/a> and statements<\/a> calling out the transfer.<\/p>\n \u201cAre we going to sue? I don\u2019t know. I hope good people will come up and find a way,\u201d McClean said. The president of the NAACP Tallahassee chapter and statewide chapter reportedly hasn\u2019t told him to sue. <\/p>\n McClean added that the FSU president told him they\u2019re \u201cunlikely\u201d to have a lease between TMH and FSU by April 1 but the sale can go through without one, according to a newly revealed \u201cunusual provision.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n The Tallahassee NAACP said the goal between now and Wednesday is to have more people express their concerns. <\/p>\n \u201cThat people rise up. \u2018It\u2019s a simple fix, when that issue comes on the agenda, vote it down,\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n More Tallahassee news:<\/p>\n The NAACP chapter president said he\u2019s not against an academic health center, but he\u2019s against the process to get there. <\/p>\n \u201cYou should know all the details if you\u2019re going to support it. I\u2019m not sure that [the commissioners] do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The NAACP Tallahassee branch said it would like to change three things about the TMH transfer. <\/p>\n They would like better indigent care language, a 4\/5ths super majority over board appointments and financial transparency requirements.<\/p>\n Mayor John Dailey said in a Wednesday interview that the conversation about the transfer has been going on for a year and he hadn\u2019t heard of much dissent in recent months.<\/p>\n McClean said it wasn\u2019t up to the public to come up to him, that it\u2019s the other way around.
