Here\u2019s what happens next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  \u2013 After Florida\u2019s latest license plate law sparked confusion last year, a new proposal just passed the state House that aims to fix it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2026\/03\/05\/florida-house-approves-new-license-plate-bill-heres-what-happens-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.clickorlando.com\/news\/local\/2026\/03\/05\/florida-house-approves-new-license-plate-bill-heres-what-happens-next\/\">according to a report from our sister station WKMG in Orlando. <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That bill \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=83157\">HB 543<\/a> \u2014 makes a variety of different traffic-related changes to state law, though the license plate rule in particular may stand out to some.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Last year\u2019s law mandated that alterations to license plates are now treated as a crime, though it sparked some confusion over whether license plate frames would be allowed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">State officials later clarified that frames are allowed, just so long as they don\u2019t obscure the important parts of a license plate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This includes the alphanumeric sequence in the middle and the registration decal in the upper-right corner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">However, HB 543 clarifies this in state law to avoid further confusion, specifically providing that license plate frames are legal when they don\u2019t cover up these parts of the plate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Meanwhile, HB 543 also makes several other changes, including the following:<\/p>\n<p>Speed Limits: Provides more flexibility for local governments to set\u00a0lower speed limits\u00a0at any level below the legal maximum speed limit in a residential district<\/p>\n<p>Disabled Parking: Lets vehicles with a disabled parking permit and permanently installed mobility access equipment to occupy\u00a0more than one parking space\u00a0when necessary to use such equipment safely, so long as no designated spaces are available to otherwise accommodate<\/p>\n<p>Golf Carts: Allows a golf cart that\u2019s been converted to a low-speed vehicle to be titled and registered for operation on roads with up to 35 mph speed limits without inspection by the DHSMV if the owner submits a written affidavit that the vehicle complies with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Laws\/Statutes\/2018\/Chapter316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Laws\/Statutes\/2018\/Chapter316\">state requirements<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Exhaust Noise: Prohibits drivers from intentionally revving their engines in a way that produces \u201cexcessive or unusual noise\u201d<\/p>\n<p>License Plate Readers: Private entities may install automated license plate recognition systems solely for use on their property, so long as it\u2019s for a public safety-related purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The bill passed the House on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/floorvote.aspx?VoteId=24706&amp;BillId=83157&amp;&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.flhouse.gov\/Sections\/Bills\/floorvote.aspx?VoteId=24706&amp;BillId=83157&amp;&amp;\">with only one lawmaker voting against it<\/a>. As such, it\u2019s now on track to go before the Senate and \u2014 if it survives there \u2014 Gov.
