{"id":181443,"date":"2026-03-06T23:44:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T23:44:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/181443\/"},"modified":"2026-03-06T23:44:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T23:44:27","slug":"tampa-bay-region-facing-major-water-shortage-amid-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/181443\/","title":{"rendered":"Tampa Bay region facing major water shortage amid drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RIVERVIEW, Fla. \u2014\u00a0The Tampa Bay region is facing one of the worst water shortages in 50 years, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabaywater.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tampa Bay Water<\/a>\u00a0officials say they can no longer take water from rivers to use for the drinking water supply.<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Tampa Bay Water has water monitoring stations all along the rivers, including on the Alafia River, and crews check the water level, water flow, and water quality to help determine if, and when, it can safely take from them<br \/>\n<br \/>Right now, utility officials say it\u2019s too low, so they have to take water from somewhere else<br \/>\n<br \/>Tampa Bay Water is asking residents to take steps like turning off the water while brushing their teeth, taking shorter showers and only watering the lawn on the designated day<\/p>\n<p>Utility officials say this doesn\u2019t mean residents need to worry about not having drinking water \u2014 they say that\u2019s not going to be an issue \u2014 but everyone needs to be careful with how much water they are using.<\/p>\n<p>Tampa Bay Water has water monitoring stations all along the rivers, including on the Alafia River. Crews check the water level, water flow and water quality to help utility officials determine if, and when, they can safely take from it. (Spectrum News\/Fallon Silcox)<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, Tampa Bay was in a similar situation, Hogg said, but thanks to the community&#8217;s help, the utility was able to conserve enough water to get through that drought.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he\u2019s asking residents to do the same \u2014 simple things like turning off the water while brushing their teeth, taking shorter showers and only watering the lawn on the designated day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the drought gets worse and people don\u2019t step in and help save water, we could be faced with tighter water restrictions from either the water management district or your cities and counties,\u201d Hogg said.<\/p>\n<p>Hillsborough County commissioners voted this week to look into restricting irrigation to one day per week year round.
