TALLAHASSEE, Fla. \u2013 The Villanova University baseball team dropped the second game of its three-game series at Florida A&M, falling 6-5 on Saturday, March 7, at Moore-Kittles Field.<\/p>\n
‘CATS UP EARLY
\nFlorida A&M struck first in the opening inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a fielder’s choice.<\/p>\n
Villanova responded quickly in the following frame. Sophomore JoJo Montgomery<\/a> delivered a single up the middle that brought home redshirt sophomore Mark Gialluisi<\/a> and senior Collin Quintano<\/a>. The two-run hit gave the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage in the second inning and marked Montgomery’s first RBIs of the season.<\/p>\n TRANSFERS MAKING NOISE The Wildcats added another run in the fourth inning when graduate student Carter Richey<\/a> doubled to right-center field, allowing Trent Tool to score. After four innings, Villanova held a 5-1 advantage.<\/p>\n RATTLERS ANSWER Later in the inning, Colton Ryals singled through the left side to bring home another run, trimming the Wildcats’ lead to 5-4.<\/p>\n FAMU TAKES THE LEAD DEFENSIVE FINISH Villanova was unable to mount a rally in the ninth inning, going down in order as Florida A&M secured the comeback victory and clinched the series.<\/p>\n MARK IT UP NEXT INSIDE THE NUMBERS
\nA pair of Villanova transfers played key roles in extending the Wildcats’ lead. In the third inning, Mark Gialluisi<\/a> singled to left field to drive in Carter Richey<\/a> and Michael Whooley<\/a>, pushing Villanova’s lead to 4-1.<\/p>\n
\nFlorida A&M began to chip away at the deficit in the fifth inning. Jay Campbell launched a two-run home run to cut the Villanova lead in half.<\/p>\n
\nThe Rattlers continued their momentum in the sixth inning. Alex Monile singled to tie the game at five, and Campbell followed with another key hit, singling to left-center to give Florida A&M a 6-5 lead\u2014its first since the opening inning.<\/p>\n
\nAfter the offensive surge in the middle innings, both pitching staffs settled in down the stretch. The final three innings featured only four combined hits, with each team recording two.<\/p>\n
\nDespite the loss, Mark Gialluisi<\/a> continued to swing a hot bat for the Wildcats. The redshirt sophomore catcher drove in two runs on Saturday and now has three RBIs through the first two games of the series. The Westfield, N.J. native has been a consistent offensive presence for Villanova.<\/p>\n
\nVillanova will close the series in Tallahassee against Florida A&M on Sunday. First pitch has been moved up to 12:30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than the originally scheduled 1:00 p.m. start.<\/p>\n
