Libraries are seeing more walk-ins with residents seeking immigration-related assistance<\/p>\n
Founder Ahmed Eid says demand has grown as more families struggle to understand federal immigration processes on their own.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have observed a growing number of individuals who turn to libraries and community spaces,\u201d Eid said. \u201cThey will go not only to the library, but to churches and mosques asking for help.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eid says many residents are simply trying to locate the correct government forms, access federal websites, or understand procedural steps when they cannot quickly reach \u2014 or afford \u2014 a licensed immigration attorney.<\/p>\n
Board member Rayza Sanchez says the organization\u2019s role is limited to administrative support.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe’re here just to help them complete paperwork. And pretty much that’s it,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cWe cannot give them any legal advice or help them take any decisions that’s going to affect their life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sanchez says Nebrass offers its services at a reduced cost and sometimes waives fees depending on the client\u2019s situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything is case by case,\u201d Sanchez said.<\/p>\n
Immigration attorney Martin Schwartz, who has practiced immigration law for more than 30 years, says financial barriers are real \u2014 and immigration cases can quickly become complicated.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is such a national crisis with immigration that it\u2019s impossible for there to be enough legal help,\u201d Schwartz said.<\/p>\n
Schwartz encourages his clients to create accounts with\u00a0U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services\u00a0so they can track their cases online and stay informed about updates.<\/p>\n
With a receipt number, Schwartz says people can also contact immigration officials and request an appointment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen you say \u2018Infopass,\u2019\u201d Schwartz said. \u201cInfopass means you’re asking for a local appointment with the Tampa office.\u201d<\/p>\n
Schwartz says educating clients about official systems can help them better understand their cases, but warns that third-party preparers cannot replace legal representation when legal interpretation or strategy is required.<\/p>\n
Back at Nebrass, staff say they focus on helping clients organize documents, access publicly available information and prepare paperwork \u2014 while referring cases that require legal analysis to licensed attorneys.<\/p>\n
The organization also offers English classes and community education programs to help families integrate into life in the United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to serve the community in every way possible,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cWe’re providing classes so they can learn English and educate them and make the process of integrating to the United States easier.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, some law libraries say they are also seeing more residents walk in with immigration-related questions \u2014 searching for forms, printing documents and researching their case status when legal help feels out of reach.<\/p>\n
