{"id":182918,"date":"2026-03-08T06:36:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-08T06:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/182918\/"},"modified":"2026-03-08T06:36:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-08T06:36:21","slug":"atletico-madrid-football-director-says-antoine-griezmann-will-stay-at-the-club-despite-orlando-city-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/182918\/","title":{"rendered":"Atletico Madrid football director says Antoine Griezmann will stay at the club despite Orlando City talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Atletico Madrid football director Mateu Alemany has said that forward Antoine Griezmann \u201cwill continue\u201d with the club after talks were held over a transfer to MLS club Orlando City.<\/p>\n<p>The Athletic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7066506\/2026\/02\/23\/antoine-griezmann-transfer-orlando-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> in February that Orlando City was in advanced discussions over a move for the 34-year-old, with Orlando sporting director and general manager Ricardo Moreira travelling to Spain multiple times to work on the potential deal.<\/p>\n<p>However, Alemany said that Griezmann is set to stay at the club, following the team\u2019s progression to the final of the Copa del Rey.<\/p>\n<p>Sources briefed on the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicated that Orlando accepts that the move is unlikely at this stage and will look to revisit the deal in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Orlando was one of four MLS clubs to express interest in Griezmann, per sources, though Orlando holds his MLS discovery rights, giving them first claim at signing him.<\/p>\n<p>MLS\u2019 primary transfer window has been open since January 26 and closes on March 26, while the secondary window opens on July 13 and shuts on September 2.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before Atletico\u2019s 3-2 La Liga win over Real Sociedad on Saturday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DVl_BvUDHBl\/?igsh=MXQ5emhoNmxzb3M3ZA==\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Alemany told Spanish broadcaster Movistar+<\/a>: \u201cHe\u2019s (Griezmann\u2019s) a legend. They\u2019re going to applaud him as always. He has a contract with us and he\u2019s going to stay with us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor him, there\u2019s nothing new; we\u2019ve gone full circle, and we\u2019re back to the beginning, where we were before. He\u2019s having a spectacular performance and that\u2019s the most important thing. He is going to be with us, he is going to continue with us and nothing more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griezmann came off the bench against Real Sociedad in the 53rd minute and recorded the assist for Nicolas Gonzalez\u2019s first goal, putting Atletico 2-1 up. Mikel Oyarzabal equalised almost immediately before Gonzalez scored the winner in the 81st minute.<\/p>\n<p>Atletico head coach Diego Simeone was asked about Alemany\u2019s comments after the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese things are always better when the player speaks directly and explains what he really wants to say,\u201d said Simeone at his post-match press conference. \u201cWe are excited and we always want the best for him, as a person as we love him a lot. He will decide when he needs to say something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he knew what the forward would do, Simeone replied: \u201cI\u2019m Diego Simeone, not Antoine Griezmann.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The France international has made 39 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring 12 goals and providing three assists. He has mainly been used as a substitute in La Liga, only starting six matches.<\/p>\n<p>Griezmann\u2019s contract in the Spanish capital runs until 2027, having signed an extension last summer.
