In response local \u2018zinester\u2019 Caitlin Crockett, librarian and owner of Gulfport-based risograph and letterpress studio Print St. Pete, organized St. Petersburg\u2019s third annual Zine Fest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The third annual St. Pete Zine Fest was held on Feb. 21 at the St. Petersburg College West Community Library on the Gibbs Campus and hosted over 60 artists from all around Florida.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zines, pronounced \u201czeens,\u201d are independently crafted publications, either physical or digital, that include illustrations, writing and more on a specific topic or topics. They are often used to share one\u2019s thoughts or opinions on a subject and can be created using everyday materials.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crockett said that she was inspired to start a festival in St. Petersburg when she learned about the Duval Comic and Zine Fest in Jacksonville.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the time, I had a couple of colleagues in the library who made zines. When I pitched the idea of organizing a zine fest, they were supportive and excited to help facilitate,\u201d Crockett told The Crow\u2019s Nest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Crockett organized the first St. Pete Zine Fest in 2024. Since then, it has seen steady growth with over 500 attendees in 2025 and over 700 in 2026 \u2014 the largest of any of their library events to date.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Heidi Hicks, an alum of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg\u2019s graphic arts program and artist behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hiheididesign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">HiHeidiDesign<\/a>, said that hosting the festival in the library offers people an alternative place to explore.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get some attendees who wouldn\u2019t normally come to open air markets that we would have closer to downtown,\u201d Hicks said. \u201cI also think that the overall message of democratizing information and art either through printmaking or zine-making is really special and it creates a very special energy in the room.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hicks added that their favorite part of the festival experience is seeing what each artist chooses to create and bring with them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I like] getting to see how local artists interpret the call for zines, because I think everyone does something else, but then they make zines for these kinds of events or are inspired by these events,\u201d Hicks said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hicks has been an artist their whole life, but got into zine-making during their senior year at USF while working as an intern for Crockett at Print St. Pete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"649\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1772978168_666_image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34224\" style=\"width:672px;height:auto\"  \/>Hick\u2019s art consists of Florida wildlife motifs, such as manatees and dolphins, and also features pieces surrounding their queer identity. Photo by Julia Ferrara | The Crow\u2019s Nest\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jeb Katsiopis, whose shop is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jebbub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">J<\/a>ebbub, said that Zine Fest differs from other markets because of the crowd it draws in and what it asks from the vendors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe culture is incredible and there\u2019s no vendor fee, so it\u2019s really accessible,\u201d Katsiopis said. \u201cI just show up and I love being surrounded by the most queer, amazing artists that there are in Florida.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zine Fest\u2019s accessibility and nature of showcasing home-grown artistic ability was a draw for Charles Caesar, who operates New York City based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cmxxiv.publishing?igsh=cnBmcjZ5Nmk4dGY4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CMXXIV Print House.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Caesar, a third generation St. Petersburg native, attended Parsons School of Design before landing in New York post-graduation. Their involvement at Zine Fest 2026 was due in large part to Print St. Pete, where they print their self-published zines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m back just for this, and to see friends and family,\u201d Caesar said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"765\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Screenshot-2026-03-03-at-3.07.20-PM-765x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34229\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7470817120622568;width:425px;height:auto\"  \/>The symposium schedule consisted of presentations from vendors about sharing hard stories, making foil zine covers, making single-sheet structures, and more. Photo by Matthew McGovern | The Crow\u2019s Nest\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Much like Hicks and Katsiopis, Caesar cites the community-centric nature of zine making and St. Petersburg\u2019s pride in its LGBTQ+ community as a reason for tabling at the event.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s deeply important [to be here]\u2026St. Pete is a really cultural place, it\u2019s a really queer place, a really cool and black place,\u201d Caesar said. \u201cI want to show here.
