PETERSBURG, Fla. &#8211; The City of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/pinellas\/st-petersburg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:St. Petersburg;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">St. Petersburg<\/a> is taking the next step to determine whether human remains from a historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/equity-inclusion\/erased-black-cemeteries-florida\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:cemetery;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">cemetery<\/a> are buried beneath the parking lots surrounding Tropicana Field.<\/p>\n<p>What we know<\/p>\n<p>City council recently approved a nearly $400,000 contract for what\u2019s known as &#8220;ground truthing&#8221;, a process used to physically investigate underground anomalies that may confirm if the possible anomalies detected are graves.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1242\" height=\"699\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/aa8ccdb0c3859f73514218e3ac6a2c03.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Researchers previously detected potential burial sites in 2024 beneath Lot 1 near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/rays-stadium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tropicana Field;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Tropicana Field<\/a>, which once sat on land used by the segregated Oaklawn Cemetery, a burial ground that closed in 1926.<\/p>\n<p>Big picture view<\/p>\n<p>Officials say the next phase of work will involve digging and verifying whether the anomalies detected underground are actually graves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/more-possible-graves-found-under-tropicana-field-parking-lots-after-expanded-radar-search\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:RELATED: More possible graves found under Tropicana Field parking lots after expanded radar search;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">RELATED: More possible graves found under Tropicana Field parking lots after expanded radar search<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Go down, see what are these anomalies, are they grave sites or are they something else?&#8221; said St. Petersburg Planning Director Derek Kilbourn. &#8220;And then if they are in fact grave sites that require an additional response, then we will at that time continue the work and figure out what to do in response to that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, the investigation won\u2019t begin immediately. City officials say the work is expected to start after the 2026 Rays baseball season, once activity around the stadium subsides.<\/p>\n<p>Dig deeper<\/p>\n<p>St. Petersburg City Councilmember Corey Givens Jr. says the investigation is important\u00a0but believes the city should go further.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019m pleased, but I\u2019m not satisfied,&#8221; Givens said.<\/p>\n<p>Givens believes one of his relatives could be among those buried at the cemetery, which was part of the historic Gas Plant District, a once-thriving Black community that was largely displaced during urban renewal and the construction of Tropicana Field.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1242\" height=\"699\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/2d3a59cf06ebbf0391bb9efcae784fde.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>He is working with state officials to try to secure a historical marker at the site to recognize the people who may still be buried there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/news\/activists-last-push-stop-development-025915095.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:READ: Activists make last push to stop development near historic Marti-Colon Cemetery over unmarked grave concerns;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">READ: Activists make last push to stop development near historic Marti-Colon Cemetery over unmarked grave concerns<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to make sure that we have some sort of monument erected to acknowledge that there were people buried here at this site,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Givens is also organizing a meeting this weekend with churches that once operated in the Gas Plant District.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to help identify possible descendants of those buried in the cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have the names of the people who were buried in those cemeteries,&#8221; Givens said. &#8220;But unfortunately, what we have not done is tried to locate those descendants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s next<\/p>\n<p>Givens is also calling for expanded searches beyond the Tropicana Field parking lots.<\/p>\n<p>He wants to do checks for possible graves left behind at two neighboring cemeteries; Evergreen, a historically Black cemetery and Moffett, a veterans&#8217; cemetery, were paved over during the construction of Interstate 175.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we have to do more homework, and I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve done enough,&#8221;
