TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Teachers in Leon County may soon see a salary increase and expanded benefits after the Leon Classroom Teachers’ Association (LCTA) and Leon County Schools (LCS) reached a “tentative agreement package.”

Scott Mazur, president of the teachers’ association, confirmed the tentative agreement Tuesday morning. The tentative agreement package follows a snag in October, when the teachers’ association and the school district failed to ratify their initial tentative agreement.

According to Mazur, the tentative contract package reached this week includes a 1% salary increase added to the Teacher Salary Increase Allocation, bringing the total increase to about 2% for the year based on the average salary. The pay raise would be retroactive to the beginning of the school year if approved.

Furthermore, the tentative package also includes several other benefits for employees, including five additional days of parental leave, leave buy-back provisions and free before- and after-school childcare for employees, per the LCTA president.

More Tallahassee News

Mazur said these provisions not only matter for educators, “but also for the stability of our classrooms and the students we serve every day.”

The full tentative agreement package is expected to be shared with the bargaining unit so members can review all negotiated terms, according to Mazur.

A ratification vote will be conducted after spring break.

If members vote to approve the agreement, the provisions will become a part of the collective bargaining agreement and go into effect according to the contract terms, the LCTA president revealed. However, if members reject the agreement, negotiations would continue under Florida’s statutory impasse procedures.

“Together we will continue the work of advocating for what our educators and our students deserve,” Mazur said.

To keep up with the latest news as it develops, follow WCTV on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Nextdoor and X (Twitter).

Have a news tip or see an error?
