TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Diesel prices are climbing high across Tallahassee, with some gas stations now charging more than five dollars a gallon – a significant jump compared to just a month ago.<\/p>\n
According to the AAA, the average price for diesel in Florida is now $4.96 per gallon.<\/a> That\u2019s up from $3.55 just one month earlier. The increase has many drivers wondering how long the surge will last. <\/p>\n Steven Thompson, who regularly travels for work across North Florida, says the rising cost of diesel is taking a toll.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s hitting the bank account pretty hard,\u201d Thompson said.<\/p>\n The AAA reports the highest recorded average diesel price in Florida was $5.72 in 2022. Now, some Tallahassee stations are approaching that record. On Tuesday, both the Flying J and Pilot truck stops were selling diesel for $5.19 per gallon, just 53 cents below that historic high.<\/p>\n For Thompson, who drives hundreds of miles each week, those increases quickly add up.<\/p>\n \u201cFor work, I cover from Pensacola all the way to Lake City and Ocala, so you know, hundreds of miles a week and thousands of miles a month,\u201d Thompson said. \u201cEvery dollar counts when you\u2019re moving heavy freight very far. So it\u2019s obviously had a pretty big impact on that.\u201d<\/p>\n More Tallahassee news:<\/p>\n Businesses that rely heavily on diesel are also feeling the pressure.<\/p>\n Jeremiah Register, with Britt\u2019s Dump Truck Services and its sister company, AAA Tree Experts, says the cost of filling up dozens of vehicles every day is affecting operations.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re trying to keep our prices down because if our prices skyrocket, we\u2019re not going to have the business coming in, so on the consumer side of that, I see people having to spend money elsewhere on their fuel costs and things like that, so they\u2019re doing less jobs, and so we\u2019re selling less material,\u201d Register said.<\/p>\n Register says the companies are hoping prices will drop soon.
