For years, FAMU students have watched upscale housing rise near FSU while options\u00a0near FAMU\u2019s campus remained limited. That is finally changing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Just two minutes\u00a0away from FAMU, a newly built luxury style duplex has welcomed\u00a0its\u00a0first\u00a0tenants, while two identical properties are already under construction next door.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
This project is being led\u00a0by Dr.\u00a0Christopher Daniels,\u00a0President of SMRT\u00a0Capital\u00a0and FAMU\u00a0alumnus.\u00a0Daniels says his\u00a0goal is to ensure\u00a0the Rattlers\u00a0have the same high quality living opportunities available to FSU students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt started with the\u00a0thought,\u00a0why not\u00a0us, \u201cDaniels\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cFAMU students deserve finer things, they love luxury things.\u00a0So,\u00a0I\u00a0decided\u00a0to build something nice, something beautiful, something that we can be proud of right next to campus.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

These duplexes will have features that are not seen in most student housing in the area.\u00a0\u00a0Unlike typical apartments that prioritize density and low cost, these homes are designed to give students a more comfortable and independent living space.\u00a0<\/p>\n
With modern layouts and updated appliances, these\u00a0duplexes\u00a0aim to raise the standard and create an environment where students can truly feel supported and at ease.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have stainless steel appliances; we\u00a0have\u00a0granite countertops,\u201d\u00a0Daniels\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cWe have tiled in showers, and we also have an\u00a0additional\u00a0half bath that most places\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have. Every bedroom\u00a0has a bathroom in their room.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Jenascia Madison,\u00a0senior\u00a0political science\u00a0student,\u00a0says\u00a0she has struggled with finding\u00a0safe,\u00a0affordable housing near campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0been so hard, my freshman year I was in Seminole Grand,\u201d Madison\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0wouldn\u2019t\u00a0even say it was safe. There\u00a0was a lot of\u00a0mold\u00a0everywhere\u00a0and\u00a0invested\u00a0with roaches.\u201d<\/p>\n
She believes that better affordable housing near campus will be beneficial to her overall academic success and\u00a0college experience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u00a0feel like more affordable housing and more luxury apartments, instead of just throwing us the trash, and then telling us its\u00a0livable\u00a0would be\u00a0great,\u201d Madison\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cIt will help\u00a0my sanity,\u00a0mental\u00a0and physical living.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
After moving to a new apartment every year due to\u00a0ongoing\u00a0issues, Madison has now found\u00a0housing that she believes is up to standards but does mention that it is\u00a0not\u00a0quite\u00a0affordable\u00a0or near FAMU.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI finally found a place where it\u00a0is decent, but it is downtown closer to where\u00a0FSU\u00a0is,\u00a0and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very expensive, so it\u2019s been very hectic,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Antoine Wallace, CEO of VETT Acquisition Consulting\u00a0LLC,\u00a0says that this project will show current Rattlers\u00a0that if you stay\u00a0consistent,\u00a0you can create something great for the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI want readers to know and understand that all it takes is consistency and\u00a0a vision, and projects like these or even bigger can be\u00a0done,\u201d\u00a0Wallace\u00a0said. Just with a couple pieces of\u00a0land,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0been able\u00a0to do over $1 million in development in the past year.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
