{"id":194089,"date":"2026-03-16T22:19:24","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T22:19:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/194089\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T22:19:24","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T22:19:24","slug":"martin-county-lifeguards-urge-beachgoers-to-be-aware-of-warning-signs-as-red-flags-fly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/194089\/","title":{"rendered":"Martin County lifeguards urge beachgoers to be aware of warning signs as red flags fly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">People are hitting the beaches in South Florida for spring break.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">But Monday\u2019s <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/weather\/forecast-level-2-risk-for-severe-weather-throughout-treasure-coast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rough weather conditions<\/a> could impact beach and water hazards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">WATCH: &#8216;Always watch the conditions,&#8217; says Chief Ian Montgelas with Martin County Ocean Rescue<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201c[It\u2019s] a little too rough,\u201d said Mike Chance, who was visiting Jensen Beach on Monday . \u201cWe haven\u2019t really been in the water, but that\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Red flags are flying at most beaches in Martin County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Chief Ian Montgelas with Martin County Ocean Rescue said they\u2019re dealing with longshore currents caused from wind coming from the south.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWhen you get out of the water, you may be in a different location than you did when you first entered,\u201d said Montgelas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">But with a cold front approaching Florida, the wind can change direction, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wptv.com\/news\/palm-beach-county\/rip-current-rescues-in-palm-beach-county-prompt-safety-warning-for-spring-break-beachgoers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">meaning possible rip currents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe&#8217;ll start getting winds out of the north-northwest, and that may change the conditions in the ocean pretty dramatically,\u201d said Montgelas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">And storms are already here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Lighting was spotted a few miles away, causing Jensen Beach to close Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Montgelas said you should always be on the lookout for changes in weather before hitting the beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cAlways watch the conditions, always keep a head on a swivel,\u201d said Montgelas. \u201cLook at what the clouds are doing, look at what the conditions are doing. And the best thing that you can do to kind of keep your mind in that state is go to a lifeguarded beach.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Montgelas said if you\u2019re caught in a rip current, make sure to remain calm, and swim parallel to shore. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He said to expect red and yellow flags flying for the rest of the week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 Scripps Media, Inc.
