THIS COMES AS REPORTS OF IMMIGRATION AGENTS SEEN ON THE TREASURE COAST ARE ON THE RISE. CALEB CALIFANO SPOKE WITH THE PORT SAINT LUCIE POLICE CHIEF ON WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR ABOUT THIS ARREST. IT WAS JUST A FEW DAYS AGO HERE AT THIS WAWA IN TRADITION, WHERE A MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER THROWING A ROCK THROUGH AN ICE VEHICLE AFTER HIS FATHER WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. TODAY WE\u2019RE SEEING NEW BODY CAMERA VIDEO AND REACTION FROM PEOPLE HERE IN THE COMMUNITY. PORT SAINT LUCIE POLICE SAY THE INCIDENT UNFOLDED QUICKLY OUTSIDE A WAWA AND ENDED WITH THIS VIDEO, WHICH SHOWS PASCAL VELASQUEZ MARTIN BEING ESCORTED INTO A POLICE CRUISER AFTER RUNNING AWAY FROM THE INITIAL SCENE WHERE HE THREW THE ROCK AT THE ICE VEHICLE, HE FLED THAT SCENE. HE WAS QUICKLY LOCATED BY THE SAME FEDERAL AGENTS, AND WE WERE CALLED TO THE SCENE AND WE ENDED UP MAKING THAT ARREST, PORT SAINT LUCIE POLICE CHIEF LEO NEMZEK TELLS US. THEY COMMONLY RESPOND TO INCIDENTS WHEN REQUESTED BY OTHER AGENCIES, INCLUDING FEDERAL IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT. WHEN ASKED ABOUT PROGRAMS LIKE 287 G, WHICH ALLOWS STATE AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ARREST PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY. THE CHIEF SAYS THEY HAVE SYSTEMS IN PLACE. WE HAVE MEMORANDUMS OF UNDERSTANDING WITH MULTIPLE FEDERAL AGENCIES, INCLUDING THE FBI, THE DEA, MARSHAL SERVICE, AND THIS IS REALLY NO DIFFERENT THAN THAT. AND AS THE CHIEF OF POLICE, I HAVE FULL CONTROL OVER WHERE MY OFFICERS PARTICIPATE AND OR DON\u2019T PARTICIPATE. AND I\u2019M REALLY NOT EXPECTING ANY LARGE CHANGE IN OUR OPERATION AS A RESULT OF THAT AGREEMENT. THIS RECENT INCIDENT IS JUST ONE OF MANY ICE ARRESTS WE ARE NOW SEEING HAPPENING ON THE TREASURE COAST THIS WEEK, HAPPENING HERE AT THE WAWA. IN TRADITION, LOCALS WE TALKED TO TELL US THEY AREN\u2019T SURPRISED. SO YOU\u2019VE SEEN A RISE OF IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT HERE? DEFINITELY. THE GUY MADE A MISTAKE. HE GOT ANGRY, TOOK IT OUT THE WRONG WAY, AND THAT\u2019S WHAT HAPPENED. AS FAR AS I COULD SEE, THE GUY WASN\u2019T HAPPY. HIS FATHER WAS GETTING TAKEN AWAY OR WHATEVER. AND SIGN OF THE TIMES.
