\u00a0Miami is moving to modernize and sync all its traffic lights, a step that could put the city among the few major metropolitan areas in the US to achieve complete signal synchronization.<\/p>\n

The Miami City Commission discussed the plan March 12, examining how syn\u00adchronizing signals could ease congestion, reduce accidents and prioritize the most dangerous intersections. Commissioners asked departments to collaborate with Miami-Dade County, assess the viability of synchronizing all city traffic lights and report back in April, after which the com\u00admission will decide on next steps.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Ralph Rosado noted that Los Angeles in 2013 became the world\u2019s first major city to synchronize all its traffic lights, spanning more than 4,500 signals. The city\u2019s Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control system uses cameras and sen\u00adsors to adjust light timing, reducing travel times on key corridors by roughly 12% and overall congestion by up to 16%.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we are comparable in terms of traffic and land uses to LA, and I\u2019d like to see us do some research on how we can work with the county to expedite that in terms of the city of Miami,\u201d Mr. Rosado said. He highlighted resident complaints about misaligned signals and requested that the city manager and public works director coordinate with the county to prioritize Miami\u2019s traffic lights.<\/p>\n

Mr. Rosado also addressed safety con\u00adcerns, referencing a countywide analysis of the 100 most dangerous intersections, many of which are within the City of Miami.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to see us get regular updates on what we\u2019re doing to address the most danger\u00adous intersections from that list\u2026 I\u2019d like to see an update at one of the April meetings as to where we stand,\u201d he said, adding that the commission would determine next steps after reviewing that information.<\/p>\n

Miami-Dade operates and maintains nearly 3,000 traffic signals, managed from a central\u00adized Traffic Management Center using an Advanced Traffic Management System. The county has already updated roughly 2,900 intersections with \u201csmarter\u201d technology as part of a multi-year modernization project.<\/p>\n

Mayor Eileen Higgins noted that the county has invested millions to upgrade every traffic signal and recommended invit\u00ading county officials to provide a progress update. \u201cIt\u2019s certainly a multi-year imple\u00admentation, because every signal has to be upgraded to become a smart signal,\u201d she said, emphasizing the scale of the effort.<\/p>\n

City staff confirmed that they have already requested a briefing from county officials and will continue outreach and col\u00adlaboration to ensure Miami stays informed on the project\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Damian Pardo highlight\u00aded the urgency, saying, \u201cThis is probably the most important project for our county.
